Because of COVID-19, many organizations have increased their efforts to keep employees safe. However, cleaning and sanitizing ruggedized mobile devices presents a challenge in that you need to balance safety with operability. The consensus view on how to handle this challenge is to use the following process:
- First, focus on cleaning to remove germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. This will not remove every single microbe with 100% certainty, but it will reduce the number of them on the device, which reduces the likelihood of spreading infection.
- Then, disinfect clean surfaces to kill any remaining germs. The best disinfectant for electronic equipment is a mix of 70% (v/v) isopropyl alcohol and 30% water applied with a clean microfiber cloth. Never spray liquid directly on to the device. Avoid getting liquid into the ports or having it drip on to the keyboard.
- The device should be switched off and all cables removed before disinfecting. Areas you should clean and disinfect include the cover/housing, touchscreen, button panel, keyboard, and touchpad. Wait until all surfaces are completely dry before you turn the device back on.
